Cold Snap - Good News / Bad News

February 15, 2016

The good news is that I collected over 50 gallons of sap last weekend. The bad news is that it has been so cold that everthing is frozen. The good news is that the sap will be preserved until I am ready to boil, which based up the forecast, might be this weekend. Last year we didn't thaw out until m... (Read More)

Maple Season 2016 - The Trees are Tapped

February 6, 2016

The calendar and temperature confirmed that it was time to tap. The temperature is dropping below freezing during the night and above during the day, which is the right condition for good sap flow. (How Maple Syrup is Made). With a busy weekend schedule, I tapped 15 trees without much ceremony, a... (Read More)

3rd Boil - March 29th

March 30, 2015

Sunday was definitely the better choice of weekend days for another boil. Saturday was cold and snow flurried all day. Sunday started in the 20s, but the sun remained in the clear blue sky and the temperature rose into the 40s. I had accumulated about 75 gallons of sap and got the operation started ... (Read More)

2nd Boil - March 25th

March 25, 2015

My wife reminds me that every year I worry if the sap will come. I can only image how early man worried if Spring would return, or the sun rise again. Well better late than never. Over the past week I collected more than 80 gallons of sap. Having a busy weekend schedule, and an unscheduled sickness,... (Read More)

First Boil of the Season - March 15th

March 15, 2015

It's been a strange season. The below freezing temperature of February, and much of March, preventing any sap escaping from the trees. Last week there were a few productive days, but I was only able to collect around 20 gallons of sap.  As it takes about 40 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of s... (Read More)

Maple 2015 - Waiting for Warmth

February 10, 2015

In past years, all the taps would be in and we would be getting ready for a first boil. This year, like last, the thermometer has hardly peeked above freezing, so we wait. While waiting, I have repaired the smokestack, split plenty of wood, and even tapped a few trees for early warning. Stay tuned.... (Read More)

Final Boil - March 22, 2014

March 23, 2014

The conditions were just perfect for boiling. Temperatures reached 60 degrees and I had over 100 gallons of sap, and with even more dripping out of the trees it was hard to keep up. The improved processing was put to the test and we boiled from sunrise to sunset yielding almost 3 gallons of syrup. ... (Read More)

Second Syrup Session

March 15, 2014

Nearly 40 gallons of sap were collected during the week - the perfect amount to make another gallon of syrup. The weather was ideal, starting out above 30 with highs in the 50s and sunny. New adjustments to the evaporator include a steel, sloping bottom and air inlet regulation that increased the dr... (Read More)

We Have Syrup!

March 8, 2014

The conditions were perfect for sugar making today. The temperature was in the 40s and the sun was shining. Having thawed my 30 gallons of frozen solid sap with a space heater, I lit the fire at about 6:30am and things started boiling quickly. Not being too sure about the event even happening, I di... Season on Ice

February 28, 2014

Last year at this time we were working on the second boil of the season. This year the freezing temperatures are not cooperating. A bit of sap running last week provided less than 30 gallons of sap. It takes 40 gallons of sap to make one gallon of syrup, along with a whole day outside. The 30 gallon... (Read More)
